Eurovision Song Contest: Copenhagen 2014 – Norway

Carl-Espen-8

Part 19 of our 39 part run up to the start of the Eurovision Song Contest brings us to Oslo, Norway, home of the 2010 contest following Alexander Rybak’s brilliant win in 2009…which means that they may be due again. Can Carl Espen do it up for Norway?

Artist: Carl Espen

Song: “Silent Storm”

Analysis: I can’t help comparing this to a Dashboard Confessional or Jack Johnson song because it’s the kind of song that should be on the soundtrack of a crappy young adult rom-com circa 2001. Espen has a decent voice, but it sounds like he doesn’t want to wake up his parents in the next room. The lyrics, what little of them I chose to care about, are good, but again, it’s just…uninteresting.

Verdict: I think he makes it, but just barely. I do not believe he will do well in the finals. The song is too timid, it’s too depressing, and there is really nothing to make it memorable. It’s just…vanilla
