2013 In Review

Ladies and gentlemen…I HAVE RETURNED! I have gone through some crap in the last six months that have caused my absence, but now that it is mostly resolved, I am going to bringing this back to life. To start, here’s a recap of all the good stuff I’ve listened to in 2013. There will be many tracks that have not bee mentioned. Trust me, they will be.

Notable Tracks: God, where do I start? All of the tracks are notable, so some cherry picking will have to be done.

Lorde – “Team”

Hat tip to Kotaku for putting this Kiwi on my radar. I don’t care that she’s 17 and looks 42, she sounds legit, and with the exception of Royals (which I have heard too damn many times), Pure Heroine is fucking A. This is my favorite song on the album, just beating out 400 Lux. The percussion line (like in 400 Lux) is my favorite thing about the tracks. The lyrics are simple and to the oint, and everything she does is melodic.

Locomotif – “Onirica” and “Black Hot Coffee”

When the crap went down, for some odd reason, I was pulled toward indie music. I trash indie music on theregular because most of it is derivative sounding, baseless, pretentious crap. Locomotif, like Lorde on the pop side of things, is complicatedly simple. Straight meody, straight harmony, simple percussion line. The music itself makes the track. “Onirica” sounds like there was some dub/dubstep influence that’s visible, but trying to fly under the radar, and it is not unappreciated. “Black Hot Coffee” plays indie straight, but doesn’t try to do anything that it’s not. The lyrics are especially great (the chorus is my favorite bit). As I write this, Locomotif reminds me of a clean indie version of Late Night Alumni (which is one of my favorite bands ever).

Eir Aoi – “Sanbika”

This is an insert song from the anime Kill La Kill. It’s made by the same guys who brought us Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann so a) watch this, watch this now and b) it’s awesome, which means the music is awesome too. The main themes are cool, butthe way this is used in episode 3 is just…well see for yourself. Awesomeness starts 24 seconds in and doesn’t end until the clip does. The second song, “Before My Body Is Dry” nearly made this list, but is on the Ohayocon list that will be posted sometime this week:

Aly & Fila feat. Fady & Mina – “The Journey (FSOE 300 Anthem)”

Aly & Fila have been on my radar for awhile, but it’s their theme or Future Sound of Egypt that did the job for me. If you needed to find the definition of modern uplifting trance without vocals, then listen to this, and be amazed. I put the radio and full versions because it is that good.

Colette – “Infatuation”, “Oasis”, “Electricity”, “Physically” and “Hotwire (Sonny Fodera Classic Mix)”

The first lady of house is back on the scene and still not taking prisoners. Colette was my first electronic show EVER, and a decade later (my God!) she still doesn’t disappoint. These tracks are drenched in 80s, in contrast to everything before Push which was more 70s influenced, but more so a deeper house than you would assume from her. “Infatuation” and “Oasis” are a throwback to her Push era sounds, “Electricity” is completely vocoded up in the best way possible, “Physically” is almost a thought experiment, but Sonny Fodera’s rework of “Hotwire” is Colette wrapped up in a little pill of total lounge clubbing goodness

Samir Maslo – “I’m in Love with You”

This was one of my favorite wind down tracks from a night a drinking during winter. It has heavy doses of John McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”, which is more recognizable to me, and probably everyone else here as Warren G’s “Regulate”. Honestly, that is the sole reason why it’s on this list, though the tempo change and vocals work well too

Morcheeba – “Gimme Your Love”

Morcheeba has been around for awhile, but it was only recently that started taking her seriously. This track is a great reason which I should have earlier.

Sébastien Tellier – “L’amour naissant”

The first time I heard the Sébastien Tellier’s name, he was being driven onto a stage for Eurovision 2007 on a golf carts, taking helium whippits to sing France’s entry “Divine”. The next time, was two years later when his track “Kilometre” formed the backbone of my Synthesizers Akimbo playlist. He’s back and at it again, this time changing it up and being semi-serious with L’amour naissant. This track is everything I had assumed I would not want to listen to, but instead, it’s the perfect night closing track.
